Our Lady of the Holy Rosary church started as a small-town mission chapel in Taft, Louisiana. Our founding pastor, Rev. G. Jobard celebrated the first Mass as a parish church on December 17, 1877.
The church served both sides of the Mississippi River and the entire St. Charles Civil Parish until 1916. The church parish originally consisted of the towns of Killona, Bayou Gauche, Luling, Ama, Boutte, Hahnville, Paradis and Des Allemands until 1955.
Our parish has survived, but it has not always been smooth sailing. Erosion from the waters of the Mississippi River gnawed away at the land on which the church stood, and parishioners responded on several occasions by moving the church about 300 feet away from the River. After many fund-raising events, donations, and pledges, land was purchased in Hahnville, to build a new church and avoid the constant erosion brought on by the river.
Our Lady of the Holy Rosary parish thrived and prospered under the leadership of its priests and with the help of so many dedicated and devoted parishioners. Under the pastorate of Father Schorr, the church began ground breaking ceremonies on September 29, 1963, for its relocation to Hahnville, with the new church being completed in 1964.
The following year brought Hurricane Betsy. There was severe damage to the church and rectory, and the community center was completely destroyed. After completing the rebuilding and repairs, the parish finally dedicated its church, rectory, and community center on November 24, 1969.
Our Lady of the Holy Rosary church has had 16 priests serve the parish since its beginning in 1877. The longest term was held by Father Bernard C. Francis (35 yrs.) and the shortest term was held by Father A. D’homme (1 yr.). The current pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary church is Father Paul A. Clark who began on July 1, 2020.
Currently, the church grounds consist of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary church, an office and rectory, the Church Community Center, a Parish School of Religion (PSR) building, an annex building, a large field, and our parish cemetery, which sits near the church’s original site in Taft, Louisiana.
